Hiring remote marketing staff isn’t easy if you do it on your own. There are a number of provisions you need to look after. Many of which you don’t even realize until it’s too late. Before we started IMS, we experienced all of these “issues” while hiring our own remote marketing staff. This is a small list of the most important ones to look out for.

Managing distractions

Many marketers are creative types. Creative types are high in the ability to generate ideas and content across a wide range of requirements. The problem with too much creativity is a tendency to lose focus or to be distracted by too many things at once. It’s important to create a process that makes it easy for your marketing teams to explore their creativity but within a framework that keeps them focused.

Enforcing office hours

When your marketing staff is remote, how do you know that they are actually working the entire time that you are paying them to do so? Make sure that you know what they are doing, and when they are doing it. Otherwise, you may get 20 hours of work in a 40 hour week.

Creative blockage

It is entirely possible for your remote marketing team to come up with some of the most amazing ideas. However, the ability to ideate also depends a lot on the environment. Work-from-home employees often begin to feel a creative block within a few months of starting with a new company. This is due to the lack of stimulation that arises from doing everything in one place. That’s why we always recommend putting your remote employees in an office building, even a co-working space. This, married with healthy communication, and you can eliminate creative blockages from your remote staff.

Taxation and Labor Laws

All entrepreneurs learn about the tax and labor laws in their own country. But when you start hiring employees outside of your borders you can quickly become confused by all the different laws governing employee treatment and benefits.

Some countries require mandatory employment benefits based on salary ranges. Some countries require different amounts of mandatory leave. Some countries require different types and amounts of tax withholding. If you’re looking to hire in a different country, make sure you fully understand the labor laws and your tax liabilities.

Scheduling conflicts

When you have employees distributed across various time zones, it is important for everyone to be flexible when choosing meeting times. Occasionally, one employee may be required to join a video conference during his or her usual dinner time. Another employee might be required to get to the office by 6:00 AM to join a call.

This is the primary reason that we have hired dedicated staff to oversee the scheduling of IMS teams. Whether you work with IMS or try to hire on your own, we highly recommend creating a healthy process for scheduling.
